Kiama make it a handful titles
Kiama have won the junior pennant crown for the fifth consecutive year after coming out on top against Wollongong in the home and away series. The first leg held at Wollongong saw Kiama defeat Wollongong 4.5-1.5, which meant Kiama only needed to secure two matches to win the title. Kiama who had a number of players unavailable and could only field 5 players, however still prevailed 3.5-2.5 in gale forced winds. The top two golfers play off scratch with Kiama’s more experienced Ethan Harvey and Will Blomley too good in their matches. Harvey defeated Lara Thomsen 7/6, with Blomley a 5/4 winner against Aksel Thomsen. The next four golfers play handicap match play. Harrison Kiteley defeated Callum Cooney 6/4. Wollongong’s winner was Heath Wheeler with and 6/5 win over Broc Callaghan. The other match between Jett Parker (Kiama) and Mimi Thomsen Wollongong) finished all square.
A field of 96 braved gale forced winds to contest Saturday’s Shoalhaven Cup at Nowra golf club. Thomas Holz from Links Shell Cove took the title on a countback from The Grange’s Ben Howchin after both shot 72. Nowra golfers took out the B grade and C grade scratch, with Matt Abernethy shooting 83 to claim B grade and Col Reeve’s 87 good enough in C grade. With the win Holz has jumped to second in the Advanced Truck Repair and Auto Care Illawarra Open Series.
Links Shell Cove faced off against Magenta Shores at Cabramatta golf club in the round of 16 of the Masters pennant competition. It was the top order that got the job done for the Links, with the top three all securing wins in their 4-3 victory. Les Legradi defeated Craig Plummer 3/1, Graeme Leake defeated Ross Liddle 2/1 and Grant Meredith defeated Ray Miles 3/2. Craig Thompson playing at number seven was the Links other winner, defeating Michael Burke 5/4. Other results saw Tom Persson lose to John Erickson 2 down, Michael Ashelford lose to gary Bailey 2/1 and Darren Sparks go down 5/4 to Barry Henwood. Links Shell Cove will travel to Cromer on Sunday to play Muree in the quarter-finals.
NSW Junior Championships
Junior golfers from the Illawarra travelled to Newcastle to compete in the NSW Junior Championships. The event was played over 72 holes at Belmont and Charlestown golf courses. The best performed in the boy’s was Ethan Harvey from Kiama golf club finished tied 11th overall and was runner-up in the boy’s 16 years scratch with rounds of 76,74,75 and 76. Michelle Di Natale from Bowral and plays out of NSW golf club shot rounds of 85,86,78 and 82 to claim the girl’s 13 years scratch title.
