Golf Illawarra retain David Wood trophy
The Golf Illawarra representative team played against the Central Coast DGA at Port Kembla Golf Club on the weekend. The event between Golf Illawarra, Newcastle DGA, ACT Monaro DGA and the Central Coast DGA is held annually and sees 16 golfers (8 open, 4 colts and 4 juniors) from each of the districts play match play against one of the other districts. This year it Golf Illawarra’s turn to play the Central Coast DGA and Golf Illawarra was keen to retain the David Wood trophy which they won in 2018 after defeating Newcastle 12.5-11.5 at Newcastle Golf Club.
Saturday saw the teams contest the foursomes with Golf Illawarra completing a shutout winning all 8 matches. There were some big wins with juniors Eddie Ward and Bradley Wills too good for their opponents, Ward and Wills were two under par after 10 holes to win 9/8. The singles were held on Sunday with Golf Illawarra needing to only pick up 4 wins out of 16 to retain the David Wood trophy.
Golf Illawarra got the job done in the singles by 10 matches to 6. Anthony Brunero won his match 8/6 and Bradley Wills continued his strong form winning his match 7/5. The overall score saw Golf Illawarra run out comfortable 18-6 winners.
